Mobile Phone Policy- Safeguarding

The School recognises that mobile phones, cameras and digital devices are an integral part of our culture and can be of considerable value, particularly in relation to personal safety.

However, we have a duty of care to our students and staff to safeguard them from cyber bullying, inappropriate use of the internet and the misuse of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.

The policy at The Emma Dodd School of Performing Arts is that mobile phones are now banned from class and break times.

Primary reasons for the above:

Student Wellbeing.

  • It’s great to chat but over the past few weeks we have seen an increasing amount of students displaying “phone addiction” throughout the morning, particularly at break times. Students are losing the ability to connect through conversation, have eye contact and to build friendships.

  • In lesson time, students are constantly checking their phones and unable to focus in class as a result.

  • They are losing the ability to communicate with their peers.

Additional reasons:

Safeguarding.

  • To reduce the potential for inappropriate communication between peers and to protect vulnerable students from being targeted through malicious phone use.

  • To improve the levels of concentration and focus within class time by removing the distraction of phones from students who cannot resist the urge to check their devices.

  • To allow students the freedom to commit to their work without the fear of being recorded without their permission.

The journey to and from Doddies

The School understands that parents feel the need for children to have a mobile phone for communication whilst travelling to and from and attending the school.

Mobile phones are only permitted on the understanding that once students arrive at the School safely, the phone is to be out of sight until the end of the morning.

In sight- Out of sight

If the School sees a student with a mobile phone, they will be asked to hand it in to a member of staff where it will be kept safe until a parent comes to collect it at the end of the session.

Mobile Phone Exceptions:

The School will make exceptions for the following:

  • In very rare circumstances, a student may have a medical condition that requires them to have a phone on them at all times as a safeguarding precaution.

  • Certain activities might require students to use their phones:

  • Recording a dance routine or song for rehearsal purposes

  • The phones will only be used at appropriate times in class and will be supervised by a faculty member.
